Equine

We do provide routine equine medicine, but we do not offer advanced care. We will do everything we can to care for your equine partner and are more than willing to refer you on to specialists that can better assist in your horse's care.
If your are looking for an equine specialist, we would be glad to refer you to any of the following:
  • Equine Veterinary Associates (Grand Island, Ne)
  • Kansas State Veterinary Teaching Hospital (Manhattan, KS)
  • Iowa State Veterinary Teaching Hospital (Ames, Ia)
  • Animal Clinic & Pharmacy (Ogallala, Ne)
  • Medicine Valley Veterinary Hospital (Curtis, Ne)
  • Nebraska Equine Veterinary Clinic (Omaha, Ne)

Wellness & Preventative Care

Picture
An annual check up for your equine partner is a great idea at any age. Although its mostly thought about in older horses, an annual wellness exam can help to diagnose or address problems that may have developed recently at any age. It also helps to form a great bond between doctor and animal so if a problem does arise, your horse feels comfortable being here. A wellness exam usually also includes vaccinations, deworming and/or floating teeth, but can also include blood work for any prescriptions they may be on or need.

Dental Power Float

Picture
Routine visits for dentistry isn't something usually thought about in horses but it is easy to forget that their mouths needs routine care as well. Many horses have unnoticed problems/pain associated with their teeth, gums, tongue, or cheeks. Through a doctors' thorough oral exam, we can diagnose these problems, and a treatment plan can be put into place.
“Floating” is the removal of sharp points from the cheek side of the horses’ upper teeth and from the tongue side of the lower teeth. Floating is the most basic element of regular equine dentistry. Performance horses and older horses usually benefit from yearly floats, allowing a more comfortable fit for the bit when riding.

Digital Radiography

Picture
We do offer Digital Radiography for lower limb examination. Radiographs are typically taken because a horse presents with lameness or there is unusual swelling.  Our equipment can give us a deeper look into a lameness or swelling that doesn't present an obvious answer and can help to give the correct diagnosis and to determine a treatment plan. Radiographs are taken here at our clinic but can be sent digitally to specialists for further diagnosis.

Castration

Picture
A growing concern for unwanted horses has also increased the need for castration. The horse owner's goal should be to act responsibly and geld colts that do not possess desirable traits. Castration is a surgical procedure performed by a veterinarian that is defined as the removal of the testicles of a male horse. These procedures are typically done with general anesthesia with the horse lying on his side. It is a fairly quick procedure and pain management and short amounts of exercise are recommended to avoid swelling and stimulate drainage of post surgical fluid.

Routine Vaccinations

Picture
Spring time is a prime time to get your horses ready for all that comes with the summer time fun. Typically when routine vaccinations are scheduled, so is a wellness exam. Horses should be vaccinated for the basics, such as:
  • West Nile
  • Rabies
  • Encephalitis (EEE/WEE/VEE)
  • We also carry vaccines to cover for Strangles, Rhino, and Influenza.

In-house Pharmacy & Prescriptions

Picture
Our pharmacy carries a wide variety of antibiotics, vaccines, and products for your equine friend, but we don't carry them all. If there's a needed antibiotic, additive, or product we do not carry, we can send you with a prescription to Heartland Vet Supply, a fully stocked veterinary pharmacy located on the north end of Hastings.

Electronic Coggins & CVI's

Picture
A Coggins Test is a blood test ran to detect EIA(Equine Infectious Anemia). EIA is a potentially fatal blood-borne infectious viral disease that produces a persistent infection in equines world wide. Accessing the proper paperwork has never been easier. We offer digital coggins that you can access anytime. Because they're digital, result turn around time is much faster than before. Using the service My Vet Link, you can create a log in and password and be able to see and print results anytime you need them.
CVI's (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection), or commonly known as Health papers, are an inspection of your animal(s) to check for any skin lesions, deformities, or infections that may be transmissible to other animals. These certificates are needed to cross state lines and attend most shows/events. They are also accessed through My Vet Link.

You can access CVI's and Coggins or create a profile at www.myvetlink.com

Hospitalization & Intensive Care

Picture
For those cases that involve a little more care, we do have the ability to hospitalize your animal if necessary. Often times reasons for an extended stay would be a severe colic which may require IV fluids and pain management, an intense laceration that would need bandage changes and/or hydrotherapy, or an injury that needs extra care that the owner may not be able to consistently provide such as an eye ulcer or a hoof injury that needs kept clean and dry. We have one indoor stall, and two outdoor stalls available to treat common maladies for short or long term stays.
